These effect our physical condition, our thoughts and emotions as well a our connection with spirit. The expressive and therapeutic practices that we do are not “art projects” but are moving, contemplative, mindful practices, even prayers that open us to recieve spirit and to hear the depths of ourselves. When combined with practices such as massage therapy, acupunture or somatic experiencing from my referral partners, the effects can be live changing.

What is Curanderismo and a Curandera Espiritu?

Curanderismo is an ancient, holistic approach to wellness that has been used in the American’s for thousands of years. It is Latin American Traditional Folk Healing and is a combination of culture, beliefs, alternative medicine practices, spiritual and mystical practices that support mind, body and spiritual health. It is a Latin American shamanic healing practice. Generally, it is a blend of Latin American Indigenous, Spanish, Native American, Moorish, Judiac, Caribbean, and African traditions. The root word curanderismo, curar means to heal. A curandera/o is someone who heals on a holistic level. They heal the mind, body, spirit, and soul. Curandera’s work as a compliment to traditional Western medicine and Psychotherapists. Female Curanderas are considered the “mujer de conocimiento” or the woman of knowledge. Each Curandera has a distinctive practice. In my practice it consists of Platica’s (Heartfelt Conversations), knowledge of Ayurveda and natural wellness practices, Limpia’s (energy purification), cultural remedies, affirming prayer, guided imagery, expressive arts and Shamanism. I work with Soul Wounds and with my training, I create healing experiences that I call Creative Healing Journey’s that involve the mind, body, spirit and soul. Interfaith practice is a vital part of the connection with the mystic for me. Each Curandera (female) or Curandero (male), hears the call of what their practice is as they go through their training and mentoring process. My training comes from the University of New Mexico with Dr. Elio Torres and his team of Curandera’s from Mexico, Grandmother Flordemayo, one of the 13 Indigenous Grandmothers Council Members and Curander Espiritu (spirit worker/sacred prayer giver), Erika Bueanaflor and Curandera Maestra Grace Alvarez Sezma.

To learn more , here is the University of New Mexico’s, Dr. Elio Torres explaining Curanderismo.

My practice specifically works with:

  • Pláticas (Heart to Heart talks) where the client is given the opportunity to speak from the heart to clarify issues, share the reason for coming, speaking intention and free blocked energy in order to move beyond current situations.

  • Limpias espirituales. Spiritual cleansing. There are many forms of spiritual cleansings ranging from using the smoke of copal, sage, palo santo, cedar, juniper, rosemary, or lavendar to  clear the auric field of stagnant energy to the use of a candles (fire), eggs (egg limpia), water, salt, stones and crystals, herbs and oils, sound, and breath with guided imagery to remove blockages and attachments from energies.

  • Limpia, Cleansing. Purification rituals using prayer and sacred tools such as a sacred feather to remove stagnant energy from the client's luminous body or the use of a fresh unbroken raw egg that is rubbed over the body in a specfic pattern, then broken, and placed in a glass of water, allowing the practitioner to "read" the person's energy. There are many different types of limpias. The limpia usually precedes hands-on healing or "doctoring" as it is referred to in U.S. and Canadian Native medicine ways.

  • Barridas, Sweeping.  Auric cleansing done by sweeping the body with a bundle or broom made up of herbs such as rosemary, rue, basil, and peppertree branches. Often this is accompanied by sprinkling consecrated floral waters on the client.

  • Working holistically with Susto or Espanto, (Spanish) literally, "fright" (more commonly known as soul loss or soul wound) can be caused by accidents, severe or acute trauma that is emotional or physical. It is a spiritual, emotional, and energetic illness that is caused when an aspect of the soul is "shocked" out of the body after a traumatic emotional or physical event wherein that spiritual aspect of the body remains stuck in the place where the incident took place, causing what some people call soul fragmentation.

  • Curación. The subtle energy healing aspect of a session which in my practice may include the use of song and bilateral stimulation sound healing and Guided Imagery with Music , feathers, or stones, and the application of special oils or ointments, or other warm clothes.

  • Therapeutic Healing Artmaking. The arts are known to be excellent ways for us to explore, express and heal ourselves. For both mind, body and spiritual healing, there are often aspects in the subconscious that we are unaware of that art making can help you to uncover. There are also things that we may not want to say or cannot find language for, that art making, writing and sound can. While this is not art therapy, it is the use of expressive arts in a way that is a compliment to the treatments and can assist you in your healing process.

Its use has been associated with alleviating symptoms of anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders, offering a promising avenue for individuals seeking alternative or complementary approaches to traditional treatments. Cannabis, with its diverse array of compounds, has also shown promise in managing chronic pain and symptoms associated with certain mental health conditions. Additionally, herbal remedies, long valued in traditional medicine, are being reconsidered for their potential in promoting overall mental well-being. Jessica is a trained in both the professional and traditional folk healing use of plant based medicines.

This sounds pretty “woowoo”. How do I know if it will work?

Each person is different. As we work together, some individuals respond the first session. Other’s try if for a short time and then determine how it impacted them and if they want to continue. Having an open mind and exhaling to allow healing to happen is a big part of this, but my Creative Healing Journey’s will not be for some people. I have been doing this professionally for the past 5 years in private practice. I have a small handful of clients that continue to meet with me every week for those 5 years, because they feel they have benefitted so much in their ability to navigate their chronic conditions. My current caseload has individuals, all of who have been with me at least 18 months for services whether it be weekly, bi weekly or monthly.

  • Harmony Farm with Dr. Paul Rudy

Paul Rudy, "Life as creative prayer"

I am a composer, performer, sound healer, photographer, writer, speaker, art-maker, and teacher, and my work plays in the obvious and the hidden while honoring everything in between in the circle of life. I have been called “the High Priest of Sound,” and my music described as “The Universe unfolding one sound at a time.” In sound healing sessions the music I play is a reflection of your inner state, so the healing works its magic from the inside out, creating new pathways for your body, mind and soul to connect and heal more deeply. I offer in-person and remote sessions, and if in person, a walk on my 70 acres with land art and sacred spaces, your healing experience will integrate more deeply.

I am Curators’ Distinguished Professor of Composition at UMKC where I’ve taught since 1998, and am a recovering academic. Life, to me, is more than thought, proof, and probabilities. I live to think, but it’s only one side of my human experience. My aural life has expanded from an early love of music when I got my first cornet, to composing and a sound healing practice where I feel and experience sound physically, mentally and spiritually.. In 2012 I moved onto 70 acres in NE Kansas. On this land of woods and prairie, I harmonize with everything physical and metaphysical. I honor the energies and ancestors as I nurture feminine energies to rebalance in harmony with the masculine. I play in mind, body, and spirit, and have built land art and a labyrinth where the laws of physics feel suspended at times. In 2014 I saw "the Universe in a single breath" through a photograph I took on Halloween night. Magic happens at Harmony Farm, and I invite you to come experience it!

Dr. Rudy also provides personal compositions for meditation and mantra. Explore his offerings.

  • Luis Mojica - Somatic Experiencing Practitioner

My name is Luis Mojica (pronounced Lew-Eace {rhymes with peace} Mo-hee-ka). I teach people how to release stress and trauma through listening to their bodies.

I'm not here to change you or judge you. My work is all about teaching. I give you the language, the practices, and the space to learn how to communicate with your own body & mind.

I come to this work from a deeply personal experience with suffering and healing that suffering. I didn’t read it in a book - I lived it. I know suffering well and I know bliss well. I will teach you as best as I can to find your bliss and transform out of suffering.

I'm a trained Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Herbalist, Holistic Nutritional Counselor, and Life Coach. Still, I credit my own life experiences, and how I healed from them, as the best training I could have ever received.

Everything I learned over, almost, two decades brought me to this moment here with you. What I teach, the spaces I hold, and the events I create blossom from my own experiences as well as my formal and informal studies.

I’ve come to see trauma as a Spirit that moves through us to save us and, when it gets stuck, we suffer. Teaching people how to revere this Spirit through movement, sensations, nutrition, and mindfulness has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.
